Okay, so maybe it’s because the dolls of my childhood always wore the same expressions…happy, smiling faces; eyes filled with mirth and joy…that I’ve grown to adore the wicked ones as an adult. A little disdain, that “I’m so over it” attitude, an evil little pout…that’s the stuff that stands out from the crowd. And nobody does it better than the Baroness Agnes Von Weiss. She is a wonderfully fresh face among the blissed-out crowd – a special doll that doesn’t need to radiate benevolence to be beautiful. Hers is the elegance of a broken glass gaze and razor blade moue. And I love her all the more for it.

Today’s model is Nightfall Agnes from this year’s Integrity Toys’ Premiere convention. She is wearing her original fashion with the addition of a bracelet from Claires (an ear cuff for humans – re purposed to doll scale jewelry) and a necklace assembled by me from craft store jewelry components. I acquired her in a fabulous trade from another collector (thanks, Kimberly!). She sports the new Fashion Royalty body (an updated amalgam of FR & FR2). Her photo was taken in our living room, lit by morning sunlight coming through the glass door with a wooden door sample pressed into service as the background.

So, St. Patrick’s Day has come and gone. But I’m not ready to let go yet. I’m like that with holidays. I never feel as though one day is enough. I enjoy celebrating. And I’m not gonna stop. šŸ™‚

Agnes Guards Her Pot O' Gold

Agnes Guards Her Pot O' Gold

Today’s model is Optic Verve Agnes. She is wearing the ensemble taken from Faerie Queen Barbie (I did modify it by removing the yellow collar) and earrings borrowed from Christabelle Barbie. She also holds the staff from Faerie Queen and a pot of gold from a sweet little Irish store in the mall. Her photo was taken in my front yard in the afternoon sunshine.

In this house, we are big cat lovers. I’ve had cats all my life. It just doesn’t feel like home without a couple of furballs to share it with. My Mom has three cats, and each of my two brothers has a cat. All of them were adopted from local shelters or rescued from a hard life outdoors. They ask so little and give so much. We consider ourselves lucky to share our lives with them.

Agnes & Rabbitt Catch A Quick Cat Nap

Today’s model is Wicked Valentine Agnes. She is wearing the pajamas from Christmas Morning Barbie. Her slumber buddy is my cat, Rabbitt (so named for his abbreviated tail). Her photo was taken in one of Rabbitt’s favorite cat nap spots on the back of our couch. As it was taken indoors, a flash was used to light the scene. Rabbitt is actually a fan of dollies and photos. He simply peeped open an eye at me as I was setting up, and then settled back to napping in complete cooperation. My little man is such a good boy! šŸ™‚

And that’s about all I can do.Ā  We haven’t had a significant snowfall yet this year. I’d love to take some outdoor snow photos, but the weather will not cooperate.Ā  Not that it hasn’t been cold. We’ve had below average temperatures all month. And the wind has been howling like a hungry wolf.

Holiday Agnes

Holiday Agnes

Since there is no real snow, I decided to put together a snowy display for my dolls on top of the entertainment center in my living room. I put a layer of fleece artificial snow down and scattered some paper punched snowflakes upon it. I taped together three foam core boards to form a trifold background. I added braces across the top and strung it with blue lights.Ā  I adorned the front with silver ribbon and hung dollar store snowflakes from the top. Then, I added a pair of pewter candlesticks and topped them with a silver shelf.

My model is Optic Verve Agnes. She is wearing Winter Concert Barbie’s gown (it was sewn onto the original doll, so I’m going to have to add snaps to it – for now it was just open in the back). I also made a little advent wreath for her head, but IĀ  didn’t add any candles.

I shot the scene with a full strength flash and still had to lighten the pictures up a bit. I didn’t do any color correcting as I liked the silvery tones I ended up with.

And May All Your Christmases Be White.

Today we had some wild winds. It all started in the wee hours of the morning when the thunder and lightning woke me up. By the time I actually got out of bed around six, the rain had moved on. But the crazy wind lasted all day long. I thought it might be a challenge to photograph a doll in this weather, but it turned out fine.

Deceptively Yours Agnes

Deceptively Yours Agnes

Today’s model is Regal Estate Agnes. She is wearing Deceptively Yours Kyori’s sequined mini dress, a knitted shawl that I made, and Fashion Royalty stud earrings and bracelet. (If you’re curious about the shoes, I gave her Paparazzi Bait’s leopard print heels.) She’s posing in my backyard, in the late afternoon, with a lucky sun break illuminating her, the woods and some dark clouds in the background.

It was wicked cold this morning, under forty degrees, but the sun lit up the fall foliage beautifully. It was worth braving the brrr to take a peep at the woods in the backyard. All the leaves are turning colors and falling, swirling in the gusty breeze. We’re at the peak of the season for fall color. In a few more weeks, the trees will be bare and Jack Frost will start painting the windowpanes.

Firefly Agnes, from the Oz convention, is wearing London By Night Ayumi’s jacket, a scarf made by me, a Barbie blouse and miniskirt from older fashion packs, Future Bound Luchia’s tights, Fashion Royalty rhinestone stud earrings, and (though you can’t see them) Perk Colette’s over-the-knee boots. Her picture was taken in the morning sunshine with the cloud-studded blue sky and flaming woods in the backyard coloring the background.

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
For nothing gold can stay. –

It’s always good to push your boundaries, try new things, test your limits. Even if you try something and you fail, you have accomplished more than if you’d never tried at all. And if you succeed, it feels so good. It’s hard to push myself out of my comfort zone, but I find that I learn a great deal when I do. And win or lose, it’s the action that counts. Because if you always sit on the bench, there’s not even a chance that you’ll win the game.

Agnes: Spotted at the Club

Agnes: Spotted at the Club

This was a tough one. I got some neat bottle holders at the flea market this weekend. They’re made by Absolut vodka. I liked the disco ball look and planned to use them in a dollie photo shoot. However, they’re not very tall and super reflective. Not the easiest background I’ve ever utilized. I finally worked it out by raising them up on an empty Fashion Royalty box to get the height I needed. There are three of them, staggered in a V pattern. The photo shoot was set up on my coffee table in the living room.

In the foreground, is Festive Decadence Agnes wearing Gone Platinum Diva Barbie’s earrings, Crystal Rhapsody Barbie’s corset top, Jam and Glam Barbie’s bottoms and High Gloss Agnes’ necklace (double wrapped around the wrist) worn as a bracelet.

I did a lot of experimenting with flash strengths, white balance settings, exposure compensation and even wrapped a tissue around the flash at one point to reduce glare. Even with all that, the photo did need some serious manipulation in my limited editing software program. But I am pretty happy with what I ended up with and learned a whole bunch along the way.

Tonight is Fashion’s Night Out in NYC. To kick things off, on Tuesday in Lincoln Center, they put on the biggest public fashion show in New York City’s history. An exclusive collection of shirts and other items were made especially for tonight’s event (proceeds support the NYC Aids fund) and some of the first models out were wearing the collection’s t-shirts along with couture designer skirts. Brought to you by VOGUE magazine, Mayor Bloomberg, NYC & Company and the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) it’s an open invitation to regular folks who want to forget their troubles for a night and go shopping for designer goods.

Many stores are featuring runway shows, meetings with the designers and celebrities and exclusive Fashion’s Night Out items. I know that Bergdorf Goodman is selling an exclusive fashion doll designed by Jason Wu just for the event. Jason will also be there personally to sign them for the lucky few that get them. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t pea green with envy. I got a preview, and that dollie is gorgeous!

Since I’m not in NYC getting my own BG Jason Wu doll, playing with High Gloss Agnes will have to keep me occupied. She’s wearing Barbie’s Anne Klein ensemble along with a pair of Fashion Royalty sunglasses and Poppy Parker shoes. Her photo was taken in my back yard, in the late afternoon, with the dark clouds rolling in mirroring her stormy personality. The sun was kind enough to make an appearance and added some beautiful light to the scene. It ain’t the bright lights of the big city, but this country girl can dream, no?

Usually, I take the photo of the day on the day I post it. Sometimes I may do it a day or two ahead of time. But mostly, I’m running right on down to the wire. There have been a few times when midnight was lurking as I squeaked my daily post in. Yeah, if it weren’t for the last minute – things just wouldn’t get done. But not today. I was going through my photo archives and came across some photos that I took around this time last year. I never got around to posting them – so, technically speaking, they are “new”. LOL

Babe In The Woods

Babe In The Woods

Today’s new/old model is Optic Verve Agnes. She is wearing the earrings, bracelet, ring and shoes from Talking Drama Adele and the bodysuit from Dressing the Part Agnes. I took her photo in my back yard sometime in the afternoon on a sunny day.

For someone who personally likes to dress simply, I’m a bit surprised when I’m drawn to fussy, frilly styles for my dolls. I guess that my little models let me explore less prominent aspects of my personality. And my Mom would be glad to know that there is a very feminine side to me (unlike the tomboy side that usually shows). šŸ˜‰

Summer Girl Agnes

Summer Girl Agnes

I chose Festive Decadence Agnes for today’s photo shoot. I love her luminous skin tone paired with such striking blue eyes and red lips. She’s wearing Andalucia Barbie’s dress and it couldn’t be a better compliment to her coloring. She’s reclining in a wire chair that I found at the flea market. Her photo was taken in my backyard, in the afternoon, under sunny skies.
