Okay, so maybe it’s because the dolls of my childhood always wore the same expressions…happy, smiling faces; eyes filled with mirth and joy…that I’ve grown to adore the wicked ones as an adult. A little disdain, that “I’m so over it” attitude, an evil little pout…that’s the stuff that stands out from the crowd. And nobody does it better than the Baroness Agnes Von Weiss. She is a wonderfully fresh face among the blissed-out crowd – a special doll that doesn’t need to radiate benevolence to be beautiful. Hers is the elegance of a broken glass gaze and razor blade moue. And I love her all the more for it.

Today’s model is Nightfall Agnes from this year’s Integrity Toys’ Premiere convention. She is wearing her original fashion with the addition of a bracelet from Claires (an ear cuff for humans – re purposed to doll scale jewelry) and a necklace assembled by me from craft store jewelry components. I acquired her in a fabulous trade from another collector (thanks, Kimberly!). She sports the new Fashion Royalty body (an updated amalgam of FR & FR2). Her photo was taken in our living room, lit by morning sunlight coming through the glass door with a wooden door sample pressed into service as the background.

It may sound corny, but I think that the name Fashion Royalty is completely fitting. Integrity Toys produces dolls that are truly regal. I remember the dolls I grew up with and will forever think of them fondly. But if you had given me a Fashion Royalty doll as a kid, I would have thought I died and went to dollie-heaven.

Empress Agnes

Empress Agnes

Baroness Agnes Von Weiss, Firefly – an Oz  convention exclusive, looking every inch a ruler. She sits for her royal portrait wearing Tiny Kitty Collier’s Little Empress fashion. (As her body is more voluptuous than Miss Kitty’s, it won’t snap closed in the back.)  Agnes poses daintily on an etched,  spherical  lawn ornament from Hobby Lobby, with a bamboo placemat from T. J. Maxx for a background and a round, wooden printed placemat from Kohls for the floor.

I love all the details in the fashions made for dolls. Tiny hooks and zippers, expert tailoring, beautiful fabrics…they bowl me over. Maybe it’s because I’m a novice at the sewing machine. But, I have just enough experience to know how difficult it is working on such tiny garments. It’s marvelous how things can be made so small. They are little masterpieces.

Agnes Is Dressed to Thrill

Agnes Is Dressed to Thrill

The Royal Weiss Agness is wearing an exquisite fashion: Dressed To Thrill. Both are Fashion Royalty convention items from different years. The earrings were borrowed from Talking Drama Adele. The background is a piece of heavy craft paper held to my front door with magnets. The photo was taken while the sun streamed in through the glass storm door. I love the vintage feel of Agnes’ hairstyle and fashion…beauty from another era.

I am fascinated by early morning light. It’s so soft and beautiful but very hard for me to capture in photos. I don’t know why I torture myself. Well, maybe I do.  Because every now and then I get a shot that doesn’t suffer from the heart-breaking blur of camera shake, isn’t horribly over- or under-exposed and actually coveys what I saw through the lens.

Agnes Gets An Early Start On the Work Day

Agnes Gets An Early Start On the Work Day

Dressing the Part Agnes Von Weiss has such a soulful face. I know she’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but she just grabs my heartstrings and pulls. Some refer to her as mean looking, but think her expression is more complex than that.  And, I don’t usually go in for suits, but Tweed Indeed silkstone Barbie’s fashion works for her.

I imagine her leaving the house at sunrise, hopping in her car and going off to work. I can picture her as a head of a small company or maybe an interior decorator…something where she can be creative and in charge.
