When I was a kid, we had a variety of different tree toppers over the years.  The earliest that I remember was a turquoise blown glass thing, shaped like an ornament with a spiked top. We had flashing stars and felt angels and probably others, but I’ve forgotten.  On my own trees, I’ve usually had a doll for the top of the tree and it always goes on last. I’ve had Tinkerbell, Barbie dolls in Santa style dresses and various different Barbie dolls dressed as angels.

Angel Barbie

Angel Barbie

Today’s model is Barbie – though I’m not sure which one.  She’s been the angel on my tree for a couple of years. She’s wearing the dress from Hollywood Premiere Barbie with some embellishments added: snowflake sequins, bugle beads and ribbon. She’s got a ribbon and snowflake button halo and the wings were salvaged off of an acrylic angel from Walmart, with snowflake sequins and crystals glued on and a hole drilled in it to accommodate the ribbon that attaches it to the doll.  She’s hung on the top (or is that the bottom? LOL) of my upside-down Christmas tree with some strong wire.

I love the holidays. We watched some Christmas specials last night. I’ve made plans for shopping trips and cookie baking later in the month with my mom,  aunt and brother. There’s snow in the forecast for later in the week.  I’ve got presents tucked away, awaiting wrapping. There is a feeling of happy anticipation, a willingness to do good deeds and a thankfulness for even the simplest things.

Eden Playing Reindeer Games

Eden Playing Reindeer Games

Today’s model is Wild at Heart Eden.  She is wearing the gold beaded top from Katiana Jimenez Barbie, a Barbie shrug, a My Scene fashion pack skirt, a silkstone Barbie brooch, Barbie earrings, a My Scene Barbie bracelet, Spring in Tokyo Barbie’s necklace and some gold bangle bracelets that are actually jewelry making links from the craft store. Eden is posed on the back of a golden reindeer that I found at Kohls. Her photo was taken in front of my upside-down Christmas tree. I did some more creative tweaking with my camera to keep the scene warm and twinkling with the feeling of Christmas. I used an 800 iso film speed setting, adjusted the white balance to compensate for the lash, lowered the flash strength and put a gauze mask over the flash itself.

I finished decorating today. I love the way the living room looks with all the ornaments sparkling in the glow of the Christmas lights.  I’d like to set up a few holiday doll displays, but we’ll have to see if I can find time between Christmas shopping, baking cookies and wrapping presents.

Jenny in front of the Christmas Tree

Today’s model is the W club exclusive, Spring Forward Eugenia. She is wearing silky reindeer pajamas and has a stuffed plush reindeer, both borrowed from Christmas Morning Barbie. Her photo was taken in front of my Christmas tree. I messed about with the camera’s film speed, white balance and flash strength to get the soft look of candlelight shades in the picture. I also tied a piece of gauzy material over the camera’s flash to reduce harshness and glare. After all of that, I still had to adjust the color balance to get it to look just right.

Oh, boy! Well, we pulled out all the Christmas decorations today. LOL, decorating at our house is like an Olympic event.  It usually takes a few days to complete. But we got a good start today. It was awesome. We hang artificial pine garlands around the mirror over the fireplace mantle and all around the living room windows, then they are covered in lights and laden with tons of ornaments. For many years, we had real trees, but last year we got an artificial upside-down Christmas tree that hangs from the ceiling. That also gets trimmed to the gills with lights and ornaments.

My husband took the day off and I  made cinnamon rolls for breakfast as we began the festivities.  Later, he put a turkey in the oven and cooked up all the fixings for dinner. After hours of decorating, we tore into the meal with relish.  Now I can barely lift my arms after all that overhead work, so the rest will have to wait until tomorrow. But it’s already looking so nice. There’s nothing like the sparkle and gleam of holiday decorations to fill one’s heart to bursting with Christmas cheer. 🙂

Aria Helps With The Holiday Decorating

Aria Helps With The Holiday Decorating

Today’s model is Dynamite Girls Electro Pop Aria. She is wearing a dress & shoes borrowed from Barbie and over-the-knee socks of unknown origins. She’s standing on a ladder that I found at a church sale. The photo was taken in my living room in the front windows, among the Christmas decorations. I think I took this picture while using the camera’s “night photography” mode, but I’m not sure. I was messing around with the camera’s functions, trying to show the glow of  the lights while still using the flash to illuminate Aria.

Ah, modern conveniences! One of the nicest things this modern world offers is the ability to do my Christmas shopping while sitting on the couch sipping coffee. With the world wide web, I have a million choices right at my fingertips. Search, choose, checkout, done. In a few days, the UPS guy or the mail carrier brings me what I ordered and all that’s left is wrapping. Now, the internet will never replace my love of actually getting out in the world and shopping in person, but it’s great for the things I can’t find elsewhere or when I’m stuck at home.

Cyber Christmas Shopping

Cyber Christmas Shopping

Today’s model is a Frankendollie: a Ladies of the 80s: Debbie Harry Blondie Barbie head on a Pop Life pivotal Barbie body. Blondie’s hair has been washed out, brushed, air dried and fluffed. She is wearing the night dress from last year’s Target Happy Holidays Barbie, I think the bathrobe came from a Disney’s Sleeping Beauty pajama doll from the Disney store, the socks are from the Happy Birthday Angel Barbie and the fuzzy slippers once belonged to a Barbie, though I’ve forgotten precisely which one. The laptop is a Hallmark Christmas ornament and the coffee cup was made by Mattel.

Blondie’s furniture is from the Barbie Jonathan Adler collection. The floor is two marble tiles from Home Depot and the wallpaper is two sheets of scrapbook paper taped together and push pinned to a piece of foam core. The JA mirror is hanging from a tiny screw that I pushed into the foam core after making a pilot hole with a push pin. The scene was shot indoors, in my living room, lit with two lamps and the camera’s flash.
