Just before the storms broke yesterday, I had taken a doll out for a photo shoot. The heat and humidity were incredible until the winds whipped up and the thunderstorms followed. We actually dropped twenty degrees from before the storm to just after. It was nice this morning, but the heat’s been creeping up all day and we’re near back to where we started. But I’d still rather have an early summer than a spring that won’t let go.

Heat Wave Eugenia

Heat Wave Eugenia

Today’s model is Tricks of the Trade Eugenia. She’s wearing a swimsuit swiped from a Midge doll from the nineties, I think. Her photo was taken on our picnic table (don’t ya love our tablecloth?) in our side yard, in the late afternoon, under overcast skies.

I must say that I need a sunny, warm day something fierce. All these rainy, cold, gloomy days are starting to wear me down. Did I mention that today started out nearly twenty degrees warmer than it is now? Or that there were wet snowflakes mixed in the rain we got this afternoon? Ugh. I’m officially cryin’ “uncle”. Please, Mother Nature, send us some unseasonably warm, sunny weather soon. I’m beggin’ you.

Sittin' Pretty

Sittin' Pretty

Today’s model is Tricks Of The Trade Eugenia. I took down her ponytail, brushed her hair out and added a little braid. She is wearing a Barbie shirt (the name escapes me but it was a gardening one with a green apron) , 2007 Hard Rock Cafe Barbie’s skirt, the belt is borrowed from Moonlight Dance LIV Daniela, the shoes are Stylish Escape Veronique’s and I switched her original handspeak hands for the other gloved pair she came with. Her photo was taken just before sunset (though not much sun to be seen) under overcast skies in my backyard.

When I have to go out in the cold, I’m not very stylish. I grab the warmest clothes I can find and run out. I pretty much look like a walking pile of laundry. But my dolls are another story. They have fashionable outerwear, glamorous fur-trimmed pieces and terrific footwear. I live through them vicariously, because I’m more likely to have my picture posted on “The People of Walmart” than in the fashion pages.

Gina Goes Glam For Her Snowy Outdoor Stroll

Today’s model is Going Public Eugenia. She is wearing Barbie’s Indigo Obsession skirt with attached fur hand warmer and silvery gauntlets, FR2 Modern Sensibility Dasha’s jacket, a Fashion Fever Barbie fur scarf and silkstone Barbie’s flower brooch. Her photo was taken on a snow bank on the side of our driveway as a scrim of clouds lightly diffused the afternoon sun’s rays.

As I’m writing this, it’s fourteen degrees outside and the wind is howling. There are a few glittering snow flurries blowing about outside the window.  I can’t believe how cold it is. And according to the calendar, winter has not even arrived yet.

Gina Chooses A Scarf From The Wardrobe

Gina Chooses A Scarf From The Wardrobe

Today’s model is Deconstruction Sight Eugenia. She has had her hair washed and brushed out. She is wearing Perk Colette’s top (one button in the middle doesn’t close in the back, because she’s more well-endowed than Cole), a Barbie skirt, Fashion Royalty fishnet pantyhose, Versailles Veronique’s boots and Fashion Royalty crystal stud earrings. She is also modeling a scarf that I made. The scarf closet (stuffed with all of my ooak knitted scarves) is a drawer organizer that I found at TJ Maxx. The floor is a holiday placemat from Kohls. I placed a piece of black foam core behind the closet for the wall. The scene is lit with a desklamp and the camera’s flash.

I finished decorating today. I love the way the living room looks with all the ornaments sparkling in the glow of the Christmas lights.  I’d like to set up a few holiday doll displays, but we’ll have to see if I can find time between Christmas shopping, baking cookies and wrapping presents.

Jenny in front of the Christmas Tree

Jenny in front of the Christmas Tree

Today’s model is the W club exclusive, Spring Forward Eugenia. She is wearing silky reindeer pajamas and has a stuffed plush reindeer, both borrowed from Christmas Morning Barbie. Her photo was taken in front of my Christmas tree. I messed about with the camera’s film speed, white balance and flash strength to get the soft look of candlelight shades in the picture. I also tied a piece of gauzy material over the camera’s flash to reduce harshness and glare. After all of that, I still had to adjust the color balance to get it to look just right.

It’s the middle of August and I’m beginning to feel the summer slip away. The nights are getting cooler (better for sleeping, at least) and it feels like the days are going by so quickly. This time each year I try to really savor the season, squeezing in as many warm weather activities as possible. I’m nowhere near ready to say goodbye.

Party at the Barbie Dream Pool

Party at the Barbie Dream Pool

The star of today’s shoot is the vintage Barbie swimming pool that my hubby bought for me at the dolls how. It is so cool! It has an outdoor shower, a sundeck, a slide and ladder, a pool vacuum,  a lifesaver ring, a barbeque and beautiful railings. I added some furniture and many assorted littles to the scene, too many to list. There are nine dolls at the party – all of them have been featured here before. I had a ball setting this up in my driveway and I took a ton of pictures. It took so long to set up, that I started to lose the light, so I apologize for the less-than-perfect photo. But I hope you can still feel the fun coming at you through the image.

When you live in the woods, you learn to pay attention. Birds flit in the tree branches, salamanders huddle under rocks, chipmunks pop up from behind fallen logs. Deer seemingly materialize out of nowhere. I’ve adapted to watching where I step, being careful when moving brush piles and generally staying vigilant to what I’ll find next. You can miss so many beautiful things if you forget to look around.

I got the idea for this photo shoot when I saw the early morning sunlight falling on some ferns in the yard. I thought it would be neat to try some pictures with a dollie peeping out from behind them. It was easier in theory than in the execution. I ended up plucking a fern from the ground, draping it over my model – holding her in one hand, with the camera in the other hand. Difficult, but effective. 🙂 I bopped around the yard finding the right lighting and background. My model is Spring Forward Eugenia (W Club exclusive) wearing Addicted Luchia’s swimsuit. The photos were taken in the morning, in the front yard on a bright, sunny day.

There’s something very romantic about a garden gate. Like a secret so special it can not be contained. I remember seeing gated gardens as a kid and wondering what they were keeping in…or out. And the best gardens were always kept by old people. I never understood why. It’s like the old peeps knew something they weren’t telling anyone else about. Now that I’m one of the “old peeps”, our gardens are looking pretty good. LOL…and all I can say is having a lot on age ya really does make you a better gardener. 🙂

Gina At The Garden Gate

Gina At The Garden Gate

Going Public Eugenia is the model of the day. Her hair has been washed out and brushed into a more relaxed style. She is wearing a one-of-a-kind dress I found on Ebay. She’s wearing a mix of jewelry: Fashion Royalty earrings & necklace and Mattel bangle bracelets. Her platform shoes are borrowed from Barbie. The “gate” is a short piece of fencing that I picked up at the flea market. I placed the gate in front of the porch garden, in afternoon sunshine.

I’m forever falling for the color blue. I guess it might be my favorite color. It seems to be everywhere this time of year  – the sky, the lake, the flowers, the birds and even dragonflies. It’s also shown up on quite a few dolls lately. Yesterday’s model sported eyeshadow in shades of blue and today’s does, too.

Gina Lounges Amid The Flowers

Gina Lounges Amid The Flowers

This is Spring Forward Eugenia, a W Club “upgrade” exclusive Fashion Royalty doll. She’s ditched her original outfit and had her hair washed out. She’s wearing a Fairytopia Barbie carded fashion, High Gloss Agnes’ earrings and a couple bracelets that I made myself. She’s reclining on a twig chair that was a gift from another doll collector. The photo was taken in the front garden in the afternoon, on a brightly sunlit day in the shade.

I’m a big fan of dolls that come dressed in several different fashion pieces. Most times the complete look doesn’t work for me though. I usually find a different doll that could wear the outfit better, or maybe the jacket might look awesome with another top, switch the trousers for a skirt…you get the idea. Whenever I’m choosing new dolls to add to my collection, I’m already playing “dress up” in my mind. There have been so many dolls and outfits that I fell in love with more for their “play” potential than their original look.

Sweet Eugenia

Sweet Eugenia

Deconstruction Sight Eugenia has had the product washed out of her hair for a softer look. She is wearing Old is New Giselle’s jacket, Perk Colette’s blouse (since she’s more well endowed, one button in the back does not close – but it’s covered by the jacket), She Means Business Veronique’s skirt, Paparazzi Bait Adele’s shoes, earrings and necklace and a Fashion Royalty handbag of unknown origins. Eugenia is posing in the side yard by a moss and lichen covered tree in warm afternoon sunlight.
