Well, it’s six degrees out now and snow storm Hercules dropped about eight inches on us between last night and this morning. Brrr! We shoveled some yesterday and there was plenty more to shovel when we woke up. But that’s all behind us and it’s time to relax in front of the fire. Yay!

Even though it was crazy cold and wickedly windy, I could not resist it when the sun came out and shone on the snowy landscape. Time for dollie photos! Yep, I braved the elements and got some fun photos.

Let me give ya some advice if you ever get the crazy notion to follow my lead…don’t. Okay, those who are still with me, this is what you do:

> Dress your dollie and actually pose her in the position you think you will be photographing her in. Because plastic can get brittle in extreme temperatures.

> Charge your camera, choose as many settings as you can while indoors (zoom, exposure compensation, white balance, focus point), because you will not be able to think clearly when you’re out in the extreme cold and wind. The less you have to do outside, the better.

> Visit the restroom – this is important! You don’t want to get all dressed in forty pounds of winter clothing and then realize you gotta go.

> Dress like you’re going to the tundra: hat, scarf, jacket, thermals, snow pants, extra socks and gloves…yes, gloves….if you can’t shoot with ’em on, put them in your pocket. Eventually the cold will break you and you’ll learn to love taking photos with them on. *Interesting fact: I learned I can use the tip of my nose on my camera’s touch screen. Looks silly – but it works, and I get to keep my gloves on. Woot!

> Go outside without your doll or camera and scope out your photo spots. Make sure you like the light, clear snow if ya have to…whatever, to get your scene ready.

> Go back inside and warm up. This can take a while.

> Finally, get out there and take a few photos.

> Go inside and review your pictures. Adjust your exposure setting, doll pose (after she warms up a bit) or whatever else isn’t right. *Hint: Snow sometimes fools the camera into taking dark photos. Just bump up the exposure compensation +.3, +.7 or +1.0 and you’re good to go. Oh, and if it’s sunny use the “daylight” option on your white balance…or the “cloudy” or”shade” option if it’s overcast.

> You may need to go inside over & over to warm up. You’ll also probably have to choose more than one photo spot if the light changes or the scene isn’t working.

> Have fun. Take a bazillion breaks to warm up and to review your photos – it’s a necessary step and you’ll be so glad you did. Because it’s tough out there – and the cold can freeze up your brain, man! But there are so many great pictures that can come out of a winter dollie photo shoot if you are crazy enough to try.

I may have mentioned some of this advice in the past. I’m old and I can’t remember. But it bears repeating. I don’t want anybody getting frostbite or cursing my existence…ya know? Be safe, folks! Anyway…

Back to the main event. Here are some images from today’s shoot:

Today’s model is Fashion’s Night Out, Bergdorf Goodman Poppy Parker. She is wearing a crochet cap made by me, Fashion Royalty earrings, Checking Out Colette’s hoodie jacket, Fashion Royalty (maybe Runway Right Away Vanessa’s?) trousers, Dreadfully Cute Misaki’s boots and Beatnik Blues Poppy’s black turtleneck top – though you can barely see it…trust me, it’s there. Also, I changed out one of Poppy’s handspeak hands with a “purse holding hand” from another doll (maybe a Monogram or a FR, not sure) so she could hold her snow shovel. The shovel (actually for gardening – but, hey, ya use what ya have, eh?) came from the Barbie Millicent Roberts Green Thumb fashion.

Poppy’s photos were taken in our front yard. The photos started in the morning and continued throughout the day with many breaks sprinkled in. Because it was very cold out and I’m not as young as I once was…but I still love to play. 🙂

I love to take photos outside in natural light. I really enjoy shooting scenes where my dolls are interacting with their environment. Many times, the background and lighting are as important to me as the doll, fashion and props. But because I rely on good ol’ Mother Nature, the ideas for my photo shoots are often put on hold waiting for just the right moment. And when it comes, I must be ready.

So I dress dolls in anticipation of the right conditions. I have props languishing for just the perfect moment in time. I watch the weather reports, scan the skies and peep out the window, taking in the scene like a child the night before Christmas. Is it time? Sometimes the right weather/lighting/conditions are transient and fleeting and I need to act fast. I also have to tough out the extremes in temperature and fight or use the wind to my advantage. Sometimes I think I must be crazy. Until the photos from my latest shoot are right before my eyes. And then I’m ready to do it all over again.

Feel The Breeze

Today’s model is Bergdorf Goodman’s Fashion’s Night Out doll from Integrity Toys featuring the Poppy Parker head mold. She is wearing Porcelain Beauty Kesenia’s trench coat, Model’s Own Luxury Accessory dress, NuFantasy Go Home’s top & tights, Blonde Amibition/Body Double Veronique’s boots, Fashion Royalty black stud earrings and a scarf made by me. She is riding a Ski-Doo remote controlled snowmobile found at Walmart (a fabby gift from hubby). Her photo was taken in our front yard on January 22nd, in the cold morning sunshine – the day after our little snow storm.

We got about six inches of snow, too high and powdery to prevent burying both Poppy and her ride up to her hips.  So, I took a piece of cardboard and smoothed down the snow some, creating a path and then I dragged the snowmobile back and forth to imprint tracks. I like to add to the realism when I can, LOL. It was evil cold out, so I’m afraid I didn’t alter her pose much. I did have to keep moving her position, though – chasing the sunshine. I had to take a couple of indoor “warm up” breaks when my fingers got fumbly numb.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with the many shots that came out. But I’m hoping for another snowfall soon. Maybe even a few inches of snow with an icy crust. Then we’ll see if I can get some radio controlled action shots. Probably, lofty aspirations. But certainly worth a try…even if all I end up doing is playing and don’t get any “keeper” pictures. We’ll see.

I had a super busy day today. First, it was my niece’s first holy communion so we took a long drive to join in the festivities. Then we hit the casino with my mom and stepdad afterward. Now, it’s super late at night and I only had a chance to take three quick doll photos – this was the best of them.

Poppy At The Church

Poppy At The Church

Yeah, it was drizzly and overcast when we got to the church for my niece’s first holy communion. I only had about a minute to grab a few shots before we had to go inside. So, I apologize for the quality of this photo.

Today’s model is Fashion’s Night Out Poppy Parker. She is wearing a Fashion Fever Barbie top, Barbie shorts, a Barbie bracelet and Fashion Royalty earrings. Her photo was taken in front of a church in southeastern PA under cloudy, drizzly skies around midday and lit with the camera’s flash.

Ahh….today was a beautiful day! Sunshine, blue skies and warm enough to go outside without a coat. Yay! It was my mom’s birthday today, so we went over to her house to celebrate. It was so nice, we ate outdoors. I am so happy that spring is finally here. Yippee!

Today’s model is Bergdorf Goodman’s Fashion’s Night Out Poppy. She is wearing an older Barbie top, Barbie Basics jeans, Bonjour Misaki’s sandals, The Royal Weiss Agnes’ earrings, Fashion Royalty sunglasses, Paparazzi Bait Adele’s necklace and a Barbie bracelet. Her photo was taken in my Mom’s front garden in the afternoon sunshine.

It’s like a mini ice age here. The sun barely makes a dent in all the snow and ice. I guess it’s got to get warmer than just a few degrees above freezing for a couple of hours each day before things start to thaw out. The snow has a heavy coating of ice over it, like it’s been sprayed with gloss sealer. It’s crazy.

Today’s model is Fashion’s Night Out Bergdorf Goodman Poppy. She’s wearing Harley Davidson Ken’s shirt, an ooak scarf made by me, Barbie Basics blue jeans and Mais Oui Giselle’s ring. Her photo was taken in the late afternoon sunshine, in front of a snowbank, on the side of our driveway. I took a whole mess of photos today. I was very inspired by all the sun and snow. So, if you’d like to see more, just click on my Flickr link. Some pictures even had me laying across our icy snowbanks (much too slippery to walk on). I’m sure the neighbors were amused.

Sometimes I spend so much time taking photos, that I end up with a lot at the end of a photo shoot. Even after ditching the bloopers, blurs and not-so-great ones there can be quite a few left to upload. I’m terrible at editing and whittling down my own pictures, so I end up with dozens on my Flickr pages. It’s even harder here, on the blog, because I usually only choose one. Today was pretty much like throwing a dart to choose, because there were so many different ones that I liked. I guess that’s a good thing. Better to have too many favorites than none at all, right?

Poppy in the Land of the Rising Sun

Poppy in the Land of the Rising Sun

Today’s model is Fashion’s Night Out Bergdorf Goodman Poppy Parker. I released her hair from the elastic holding the factory braid in place and brushed it out. She is wearing Disney Mulan’s dress, Heidi Klum Barbie’s earrings and Back to Black Natalia’s shoes.  (See my Flickr for photos that show the shoes, if you wish to see them.) Her photo was taken in late afternoon sunshine along side my driveway. I used the white balance correction setting on my camera to give the scene a golden glow.

This time of year, graveyard tours and cemetery walks at older historical locations seem to be quite popular. I don’t know if it’s the recent influx of all the ‘paranormal’ and ‘haunted’ reality television shows fueling it or simply a sign of the season. I remember visiting old graveyards with my family when I was a kid and marveling at how old the dates on the headstones were and how no one seemed to live very long. We have a small cemetery in town that dates back to the Revolutionary War and hubby took me there today. I have to say that despite some dark clouds looming and falling leaves tossing on the wind, it didn’t feel “creepy” to me. In fact, being in the graveyard seemed to fill me with a sense of peace and serenity. Is that weird? Well, whether or not, that’s how I felt: calm, relaxed and free from worry. And I hope all the souls residing there feel the same way.

Poppy In The Graveyard

Poppy In The Graveyard

Today’s doll is a Poppy that’s not a Poppy. This dollie was made for Fashion’s Night Out at the Bergdorf Goodman store in NYC – though it utilizes the Poppy head & body molds, it is not officially considered a Poppy Parker character doll. She is wearing her original earrings and shoes, Cynthia Rowley Barbie’s trenchcoat, an Integrity Toys dress from a baggie doll and a Fashion Royalty multi-strand necklace. Poppy is leaning on a headstone and looking over the rest of the grave markers in the back corner of the cemetery.

I’d Like To Think That The Calmness I Felt In The Graveyard

Came From Being Surrounded By Souls At Peace.
