Winter holds a magic that no other season can match. But with that wonder comes a fierce nature that cannot be ignored. It’s the time of year that I am most drawn to taking doll photos…and also the most difficult. How can anyone resist the alluring sparkle of ice wrapped trees creating a crystal forest? Sunlight on snow glimmering, shimmering and reflecting tiny prisms of color beckon hypnotically. And yet, the plummeting temperatures set teeth to chattering and numb one’s fingers almost immediately upon stepping outside.

A mountain of clothing (“I can’t put my arms down!”) and constantly running indoors to warm up are a necessity. But that’s not the only obstacle to overcome. Posing the dolls and considering where exactly the photos will be taken before venturing out are key. Because very cold conditions can cause the plastics that the dolls are made of to become temporarily more brittle than normal, risking chips or cracks. So, handling them very carefully is a good idea under such tough conditions. Also, the cold can cause one to be a bit less mentally alert – I think of it as “cold dumbness” – so anything that can be thought of while still warm and indoors is a plus. Even setting up the camera controls while still in the house (maybe adding a stop for more well-lit photos or adjusting the zoom and approximately framing the photo) helps get a jump on a good shot. Oh, and anticipating a hot chocolate afterwards is a good motivator, too.

Taking winter doll photos can be a crazy, challenging frenzy. But when it works out, it’s a huge thrill. And if it doesn’t work out so well, it’s worth taking a break, warming up in front of the fire and going out to trying again. Because winter’s icy, snowy, wicked and wonderful charms are really too enchanting to resist.

Today’s model is Poppy Parker, a workshop doll I was able to purchase secondhand from the recent 2013 Premiere convention (thanks, Teresa!). She is wearing a one-of-a-kind crocheted ponytail hat made by me, Fashion Royalty earrings, The Outsider Misaki’s jacket, a rhinestone snake bracelet (a people-sized ear cuff from Claires), Barbie Best Models On Location Monte Carlo trousers and Trendy Girl Misaki’s boots. Poppy’s photos were taken yesterday morning (temperatures were around fifteen degrees – so cold!) all around our yard.

So, yeah, it’s no longer summer. Autumn is in full swing. The chimney’s been swept and flames crackle along the logs in the fireplace. A nip is in the air and a wicked wind blows. The trees have taken on burning hues, molting their leaves and spicing the cooling breeze with their scent. Time to bundle up the dollies and capture it through the lens of a camera…

Today’s model is Summer Blues Misaki. Her hair has been washed, brushed and restyled with higher ponytails. She is wearing one of the fashions from the Poppy Parker as Corie Bratter: Barefoot in the Park giftset and boots from Fashion Royalty’s Checking Out Colette. Her photo was taken by the lake at Bushkill Falls about two weeks ago.

We’ve had a few teases of springtime weather, but this morning it was winter all over again. I woke up to a scene straight out of a story book. Big, fluffy clumps of snow covered the trees, weighing them down. We only got a couple of inches, but that’s plenty. It’s stopped snowing since and the big melt is already starting to happen.

Today’s model is Wild At Heart Lillith. She is wearing FR2 Dasha’s tank top and jacket, Urban Outfitting Nadja’s trousers and Barbie’s BMR Going To The Game scarf accented with a silkstone Barbie brooch. Her photo was taken this morning in the backyard while the snow was still falling and the clouds were heavy enough to blot out the sun.

If you follow the doings at Integrity Toys, then you know that they just rolled out preview photos of this year’s collections. I’ve been busily dreaming of which ones to put on my preorder list and hoping I’ll be able to get them. The edition sizes are quite limited and the list of dolls is long. There was one doll revealed that captured my attention and my imagination: Nu.Fantasy Pure. She’s a couture take on Snow White from the fairy tales and utilizes the Fashion Royalty NuFace “Erin” head mold. I love the name. Pure. So today’s shoot was inspired by an Erin doll named “Pure”.

Today’s model is Making A Scene Erin. She is wearing Ask Any Girl Poppy Parker’s dress. And surely she looks to fit the definition of pure, no? Oh, there’s an undercurrent of sass, mystery, melancholy and knowing – she wouldn’t be herself otherwise. 😉 But I like that about her. The photo was taken around midday on the road in front of my house, after thunderstorms moved through and the melting snows turned an ordinary day into a misty, foggy dreamworld.

It snowed today. Fat, fluffy flakes wafting down from the heavens, covering everything in fantastic whiteness. The sun slipped in and out of the clouds changing the scene from dreary to bright and back again. A perfect day to dress up a dollie and run outside with the camera.

Reluctant Debutante Poppy Parker was photographed with my wintry backyard as her backdrop. I washed out her hair and made a beaded elastic to hold it back from her face. Her earrings are from Shapeshifter Natalia, the necklace is an ooak made by me. Her dress is Trace of Lace Barbie’s and her faux fur coat is off of Kimora Lee Simmons Barbie. The snowflakes in her hair and on her coat are pure nature.
